Marathon Update

Although I haven’t been able to run as much as I would’ve liked lately, I feel that I’ll be able to do the madison marathon at a solid pace. Yesterday, I ran 14 miles (from my parents’ house in Milwaukee to the Art Museum and back) keeping about a 7:06 pace. Overall, it felt really good, except for the last mile or so. That means that I’ll have to start doing more 14+ mile runs just get my legs used to the longer distance so that they can handle another 12 miles. Also, it will help to have water and food with me. I brought a Clif bar along yesterday and that certainly helped.

The Bad Plus

I went to the Bad Plus show last night at the majestic theater in Madison. Overall, they were excellent (except a forced-sounding cover of Nirvana’s “Lithium”). Their ability to work with their instruments always impresses me -Dave King’s drum playing, with his goofy smile, is a show by itself.

Have a look:

Album Art
It’s finally starting to get warm outside; I can go running without a zillion layers and maybe next week I’ll bike to work. At the same time…. it is Wisconsin, so we’ll get some snow in April.

Anyway, here are some cool songs that I’ve put together from this spring (or not), that I think fit the weather.

1. Dan Deacon – Snookered from Bromst
2. Phoenix – 1901 from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
3. José Gonzalez – Heartbeats from Veneer
4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Soft Shock from It’s Blitz!
5. Animal Collective – My Girls from Merriweather Post Pavilion
6. Fever Ray – If I Had a Heart from Fever Ray
7. M83 – kim & jessie from Saturdays = Youth
8. A.R. Rahman / MIA – O…Saya from The Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack
9. The Hold Steady – Slapped Actress from Stay Positive
10. Sonic Youth – Teenage Riot from Daydream Nation
11. Bon Iver – Blood Bank from The Blood Bank EP
12. Okkervil River – Plus Ones from The Stage Hands
13. Santogold – I’m a Lady from Santogold

The South is Killing my Arteries

I’m in Greenville, SC for work. The brocolli and mac ‘n cheese that I had for lunch were swimming in butter -granted it was the best mac ‘n cheese that I’ve ever had.

The food that I’ve eaten out for dinner has been incredible here in Greenville. Many of the restaurants line up along the absolutely beautiful main street here in downtown Greenville. The restaurants emit this very friendly and relaxing glow. I hope I get to come back here during the summer when I can sit outside and the trees have leaves on them.

Tuesday night I had swordfish with greenbeans, on top of sliced smoked duck, andouille sausage, and beans. The restaurant, Soby’s, had a great atmosphere: nice and trendy, but still comfortable -the service was also very friendly. The chef has a blog about his endeavours in creating “new southern” food.

Last night I had a wonderfully seasoned and grilled sashimi-grade tuna steak with a spinach salad at a brewing company on the main street.

Good Songs from 2008: Shearwater – “Rooks” and “Leviathan Bound”

I wish that I had discovered these guys earlier. There is something serene and beautiful in their music … and it is rooted in both the power and softness of Jonathan Meiburg’s voice (originally the keyboard player in Okkervil River). I wouldn’t have guessed that the band was from Austin, TX -it feels like their songs were crafted for a snowy winter.

This scene is bliss:

(edit: Repost of the youtube video. This one doesn’t have the same quality, but the other one was deleted.)
It helps that “Sometimes” is one of my favorite songs…
