My birthday has now moved 9 days to July 10th because the Hold Steady are playing at the Majestic here in Madison. Friday + July + Majestic = perfect setting for that band in my mind.
I already have my pre-sale tickets. I’m sure that they’ll sell out.
This song has been stuck in my head recently after it came up on a Pandora playlist while I was at work:
(Another ridiculous video)
It sounds like a mix between Metric and M83.

A few great new songs. It’s been a good year so far for bands with female vocalists.
Both of these songs have an airy, moody, and mysterious feel.
Metric – “Help I’m Alive”
(see other Metric if you enjoy Emily Haines’s voice, but especially Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl”)
Bat for Lashes – “Daniel” (this video is kinda dumb, sorry, but the song is quite good)

It’s taken awhile for Phoenix to grow on me. Initially, I pushed them aside as a pop/rock band, but their song “Too Young” got stuck in my head.
I really like their new song “1901.” Simple riffs, crisp vocals, and a nice crunching synth line here and there.

It’s finally starting to get warm outside; I can go running without a zillion layers and maybe next week I’ll bike to work. At the same time…. it is Wisconsin, so we’ll get some snow in April.
Anyway, here are some cool songs that I’ve put together from this spring (or not), that I think fit the weather.
1. Dan Deacon – Snookered from Bromst
2. Phoenix – 1901 from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
3. José Gonzalez – Heartbeats from Veneer
4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Soft Shock from It’s Blitz!
5. Animal Collective – My Girls from Merriweather Post Pavilion
6. Fever Ray – If I Had a Heart from Fever Ray
7. M83 – kim & jessie from Saturdays = Youth
8. A.R. Rahman / MIA – O…Saya from The Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack
9. The Hold Steady – Slapped Actress from Stay Positive
10. Sonic Youth – Teenage Riot from Daydream Nation
11. Bon Iver – Blood Bank from The Blood Bank EP
12. Okkervil River – Plus Ones from The Stage Hands
13. Santogold – I’m a Lady from Santogold
I’m excited.

Quick story about my experience with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs:
1. See video for “Maps” on MTV way back when. Think to self: “BORING!” I write off the band.
2. I’m at Festival Bue in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They play after TV on the Radio and before Daft Punk. Turns out that they’re a rock band… that’s pretty good… with a kick ass live performance. “Gold Lion” sounds incredible outdoors at a giant festival.
4. Still not my favorite song of theirs, but “Maps” grows on me.
4. I hear “Heads Will Roll” from they’re upcoming album. I’m hooked.
Great minds think alike: Kanye West seems to like it too. His blog has the free download.

This week’s free video at the iTunes store is Fever Ray’s “If I Had a Heart.” The funny thing is that it’s categorized under “dance.” It’s a moody and ambient song with a chilling video, but it’s certainly not a dance song.
The categorization is cause for some funny comments like:
“ok…so how am I supposed to dance to this…it’s boring all the way through?!?”
