Tickets for the show at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on Sept. 27 sold out very, very quickly.

I would have missed the following apocalyptic sound blast:

I guess I don’t have to worry about salvaging the remains of my eardrums in late September.

I have one younger aunt who listens to quite a bit of contemporary music so we like to discuss current favorites. I recently just emailed her a list of bands and songs that I feel sums up what I’m listening to at the moment. Below is a playlist (longer than a CD) derived from that email. Expect songs that I’ve used before and note that the order is engineered to flow… somewhat.

Autolux – “Turnstile Blues” from Future Perfect
Lush – “For Love” from Spooky
Ride – “Vapour Trail” from Nothing
My Bloody Valentine – “When You Sleep” from Loveless
The Jesus and Mary Chain – “Just Like Honey” from Psychocandy
A Place to Bury Strangers – “Don’t Think Lover” from A Place to Bury Strangers

PPC Discrimination and NBC

I am thoroughly disappointed with NBC at the moment. They are offering high quality replays of Olympic events on their website -so, having missed the Americans stick it to the trash-talking French in the 4 X 100m Freestyle relay, I was eager to watch. I was not only unable to watch it via the NBC website, but anywhere else on the web. First, because the video plugin that NBC uses, Microsoft Silverlight, does not support PPC Apples. It only supports Intel Macs and any machine running XP SP2 or newer. I believe that this unevenly widens the age of Wintel machines that can see the video versus the number of Mac OS machines. In an age where the technology exists for widespread compatibility, not having it is quite sad. Sites like DailyMotion and YouTube very successfully use Flash to have video playable on all sorts of machines. My computer really isn’t that old (3 years old) and definitely runs much faster than many Windows machines that are qualified to play the media. In addition, NBC is waging all out war on Internet media in order to shut down all other leaks, so I’ve really had a difficult time finding the clip. NBC, why not do some sort of joint-venture to expand compatibility and streaming qualities? I’m guessing Microsoft probably offered some sort of sweet deal for exclusive usage.

If you want to access it and have an Intel computer, here’s the link:

Another Weekend

Overall the dinner at Fresco on Friday, as a part of Restaurant Week, was very good. I ordered the “Seared Sashimi Grade Scallop,” the “Sheep’s Milk Ricotta Cheese Gnocchi,” and the dark chocolate cake. All were excellent, though I believe, for the gnocchi, if you put enough cream and cheese into such a dish, any place can do it and succeed. The view was gorgeous and the plates very chic. Both to be expected from a restaurant on top of an art museum.

On another note, I live on the far West Side of Madison, south of the beltline and west of Fitchburg, and have been trying out various grocery stores. So far I have been to these places:
-The Super Target on McKee
-Pick ‘n Save on Maple Grove
-Cub Foods off of Verona Rd.
…and today Woodman’s Market off of McKenna. I went to school in Appleton, WI at Lawrence University and we would utilize the Woodman’s up there, so I was glad to find one in Madison. I believe it trumps the other markets for the following reasons: it’s local, it’s employee owned, it’s cheap, it’s huge, and, finally, it has a wonderful liquor store with a giant selection of wines and microbrews. The drawbacks are that it’s a zoo on weekends, it can get frustrating to navigate, and it doesn’t take any credit cards. I feel the benefits far outweigh the small inconveniences. I found 3.5lbs of certified organic boneless/skinless chicken thighs for $9, not too bad.

I will be buying as many veggies as I can at the farmer’s market until October rolls around. This weekend they had a xylophone band playing near State Street just off from the square.

Enough with Phelps. Go Crocker. It’s refreshing (or so it seems) to see life and humanity in a top tier athlete.
